1. Take charge

Children love limits; which in turn helps them understand and manage the world. Show them your love by setting boundaries so your kids can explore and discover their passions safely.

2. Avoid comparisons and labels

Most parents are guilty of comparing their kids with other children. Rather, you should be the kind of parent that takes the time to instil in your child good manners, habits, and morals.

But how do you do that? Relax. Good parenting happens in real time, on the spot, and in the moment.  As a parent, the trick is to recognize those moments when your actions and reactions an help your child learn and grow in the best possible ways. It’s important that you consider who your child is, and not just his age.

For example, if your child is naturally shy and quiet, it may be that she is reserved- not that she cant talk. Among siblings, comparisons can lead to labels.  Even labels meant to praise your children’s differing abilities can later become problematic.

Of course, other would be times when you’d find yourself describing your child’s likes and dislikes. However, when you do so, reframe your words.  So, instead of saying “wild”, try “energetic”. “Spirited’ (not “hyper”), and “careful” (not “shy”).

3. Don’t clip your child’s wings

While your mother bear and papa bear instincts are always in full mode as a parent, remember that your child’s mission in life is to gain independence. So, when she’s developmentally capable of dressing herself, tying her shoelaces, or clearing her plate from the table, let her. Giving your child the sense of responsibility will boost her self-esteem.

4. Let them make mistakes

Don’t try to fix everything for your kids; instead, let them make mistakes, and learn from it. When you lovingly acknowledge your child’s minor problems without rushing immediately to save him, you are teaching her self-reliance and resilience.

5. Remember that discipline is not punishment

As a parent, when you enforce limits, you’re really teaching your kids how to behave in the world. In turn, you’re helping them to become competent, caring, and in control.

6. Play with your children

Let your kids pick the activity, and don’t worry about the rules.  Just go with the flow and have fun. That’s the name of the game.

7. Encourage daddy time

Do you know that the greatest untapped resource for improving the lives of kids is time with their dad? Yes, it’s really true! Kids whose fathers’ engage with them perform better in school, solve problems successfully, and generally cope with whatever curveball life throws at them.

8. Be a role model

Kids learn by watching their parents. Therefore, being respectful, and having good behaviours works better than telling them what to do.
